Our Mission
The mission of Wareed is to educate the public about the musical traditions of the Arab world and the larger Middle East through education and live performance. Operating in San Luis Obispo County, we are committed to fostering community interest and participation in Arab music through curated lectures and authentic live musical performances featuring masterworks of Arab music repertoire.

Wareed will share a spirited program highlighting the brightness of Maqam ‘Ajam and related musical colors through pieces such as Tila’it Ya Mahla Nurha, Ahu Da Illi Sar, and Nassam ‘Alayna al-Hawa. The ensemble will weave Arab, Mediterranean, and regional influences into an interactive experience where students explore rhythm, melody, and cultural connection.

Students were treated to the sounds of the oud, voice, and doumbek in Wareed’s performance of beloved Arab classics like Lamma Bada Yatathanna and Zmrina o Reqdina. The session combined performance and dialogue, introducing the beauty of Arab musical modes and rhythms in an accessible, engaging way.

Wareed guided students on a musical journey through the Arab world’s diverse maqamat, or melodic modes, beginning in the warmth of Bayat and moving through Farahfaza, Hijaz, and Rast. With live improvisations on oud and qanun, the ensemble brought classical forms like Samai Bayat and Longa Riyadh to life while inviting students to listen for the emotional color of each mode.
